The Great Civil War of India (Maha-Bharata): The longest poem on Earth with nearly 100,000 verses and 1.8 million words, the Mahabharata is perhaps the KEY to understanding India. It is a massive, multi-generational story of rival groups within the Bharata Dynasty (from which India derives its name, Bharata) and how their conflicts plunged the country into a fratricidal civil war. This work contains within it one of the most sacred of scriptures in the world, the Bhagavad Gita (Divine Song [of the Lord]) in addition to an encyclopedia of information about post-Vedic India. The juxtaposition of Dharmic morality with the raw politics, greed, lust, anger and ego of characters in this novel will put any modern-day movie or soap opera to shame.
